Practicing in an out of state jurisdiction or in an unfamiliar subject matter can be very complex, time consuming, and intimidating. First and foremost, practitioners must be barred in the particular jurisdiction in which they seek to practice. In order to practice in an outside jurisdiction on a temporary basis, practitioners must seek pro hac vice admission. Each court, and often time judges, have their own particular local rules that practitioners must comply with. In addition, most jurisdictions require that outside counsel associate with a local counsel who is barred in the jurisdiction.
Therefore, it is imperative for outside counsel to partner with knowledgeable local counsel who can lead a practitioner through the myriad of local practice and provide necessary substantive and practical expertise.
